The ANCQ questions are designed in a way to sharpen the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). HOTS require the student to interpret, think, analyze and synthesize the given information in order to arrive at the answer. With the changing times, it becomes imperative need of the hour to impart school students some specific training to enhance their analytical, thinking and interpreting skills.
The ANCQ is not assessment of chemistry knowledge, but rather an opportunity to promote Science/Chemistry and for teachers to gauge the understanding their students have of the subject. The quiz is based on the philosophy that most of the students are able to answer many questions. The quiz does not test specific knowledge based on rote learning. Instead, it imparts you with fact/information and based on this fact/information the question is asked. The questions are based on fundamental aspects of science involving its applications in modern society. The ANCQ philosophy is in tune with the fact that Strong Science builds Strong Nation.
ANCQ is a paper-pencil quiz consisting of 30 MCQs to be solved in 60 minutes. ANCQ is a free of syllabus quiz. In order to avoid any difference in syllabus among participating countries, all students compete on a grade and country basis i.e., a Class 10 student from India competes only with other Class 10 student from India. With this philosophy at hand the whole event becomes extremely encouraging.
ANCQ results are very supportive and help students and teachers to assess their strengths and weaknesses. Each student gets the result depicting the right and wrong choices made by them while answering the Quiz questions. It’s worth noticing our own mistakes and to learn out of it.
The learnings exercise must be encouraging and substantially rewarding, therefore, 40% of the total numbers of participants across each participating country are awarded. A certificate of excellence along with a plaque is awarded to student securing 100% marks in the quiz i.e. the raw score 30/30. Each participant receives a certificate of participation.
The School result report comprises of raw score (number of correct answers out of 30) for each participant, his/her percentile rank within other entrants from the same class and country as well as the award won (if any).
Along with these the school report comprises of statistically treated data on following basis:
1. Student Analysis: depicts the performance of a particular student in comparison to other students in India of the same category.
2. Question Analysis: Depicts the Question Difficulty, Strengths and Weaknesses of all the participants which in turn is of huge importance to the subject teacher as well.
3. Student Response Analysis: Throws light on the type of assistance required by students in a particular topic.
A merit certificate from an institute such as RACI is a landmark in the academic career of any student worldwide. For each participating country the awarding of merit certificates will be as follow:
o H D Excellence Award of Excellence for outstanding performance.
o High Distinction (HD) The top 10% participants in the country.
o Distinction (D) The next 15% participants in the country (10% to 25%).
o Credit (C). The next 15% participants in the country. (25% to 40%).
Learning is a prolonged and continuous process. It’s a constructive phenomenon and we at ANCQ believe that the foundation gets stronger brick by brick. Therefore, students are advised to take up ANCQ right from class 7 onwards because in science learning “earlier is the better”. Moreover, up to class 10, the students have relatively more leisure time to participate in such entertaining and enriching experiences.
Class 11 and 12 students get additional practice material and opportunity to collect precious certificate from Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) before they leave school and enter into the graduate college. These certificates become the salient entry into their resume for rest of their professional lives especially while applying to elite universities/institutes.
The Quiz will be held in two junior levels
i) Class 7-8
ii) Class 9-10
In two senior levels:
i) Class 11
ii) Class 12
The proposed quiz takes place across the length and breadth of India. The prominent places where the Quiz takes place are Ahmedabad, Akola, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Bangalore, Bikaner, Bhilai, Bijnor, Bellare, Banasthali, Dehradun, Cochin, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Neyvelli, Delhi, Gurgaon, Dehradun, Darjeeling, Dewas, Karnal, Koraput, Kohima, Kolkata, Faridabad, Farrukhabad, Gandhinagar, Goa, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Indore, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jabalpur, Kottayam, Kanpur, Kakinada, Kurnool, Karaikudi, Korba, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Mussorie, Meerut, Mysuru, Nagpur, Nasik, Noida, Patna, Pune, Port Blair, Pondicherry, Ranchi, Raipur, Rajkot, Surat, Srinagar, Sonepat, Tezpur, Udaipur, Udupi, Varanasi, Vadodara and Visakhapatnam to name a few.
ANCQ-2017 marked the entry of schools from Bahrain, Oman and United Arab Emirates for the first time in this event. We expect an enthusiastic response from the school students in these countries and wish that schools from Kuwait and Qatar too come forward to organize this International Science Popularization event in their schools as well.
